I had my first lesson with my brand new piano teacher. We meet via Zoom, and it’s certainly something that I’m going to have to work to become accustomed to.
She seems very organized, and before the lesson began, she sent me the piece that I’m going to be working on – Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach. It’s a jaunty little tune that seems impossibly beyond my capabilities at this moment.
I was pretty sleep-deprived for my lesson, and it showed. I do not know the notes on the staff well at all, and I became confused and a more than a little rattled while trying to sight-read the new piece that she selected for me. I definitely have learning the notes on the staff on my agenda this week.
We also worked on 5-finger patterns. I had already read how to create the first few scales, so I’m applying that to learning all 12 five finger patterns for next week. I’m also working on a couple of octaves of the C-scale for next week as well.
To further my sight reading, I’m going to try to spend some time on Piano Marvel. I’m not sure how helpful it will be, but I’m hopeful that it will speed up the note learning process for me.
